Field care is the most important factor in how your mount turns out. These videos are extremely helpful in ensuring your cape is skinned properly. Please contact us before you're hunt if you are unsure about which method to use.
If packout weight and DWR checks are not an issue we recommend this method up until the 13:00 minute mark. We recommend caping the head out only if necessary. For mountain lions, skin leg down to just above paw and cut through leg bone leaving paw intact.
Video starts at the 3:00 minute mark and ends at the 23:30 mark, no need to skin out head, cut off at neck joint and leave attached to cape. If you are not confident in skinning the animal out, please bring animal in whole. We highly recommend freezing the animal whole or just the cape if skinned to ensure no hair slippage. Skin legs down as far as possible and cut off leg bone leaving paws intact. Do not split tail, cutoff at base and leave attached.
Only cape out head if pack out weight is an issue and you are confident in doing this step. Its very important you do not cut into the eyelid, the gland just below the eye, or the very thin hair in the armpit. If you do not cape out the head, stop the dorsal cut right at the neck joint and cut the head off. Cool down cape and head as soon as possible. Freezing is best if you can.
We recommend not caping out the head unless packout weight is an issue.
